For as long as they held power, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) concentrated development in the Southern Region at the expense of all other administrative regions in rhe country.
The two DPP presidents wanted all major projects to be in the Southern region. Malawians will recall that Bingu Mutharika wanted Bingu Stadium to be constructed in his home district, Thyolo.
And it was Madam Joyce Banda who reversed the endorsement soon after she took power. DPP even snatched the actual plan of Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) which was to be built in the area of Traditional Authority Chimutu called Nalikule and relocated it to Thyolo.
And if we go to Phalombe, Thyolo , Mulanje, we have more tarmac roads than in the other regions
When President Chakwera took over power from Mutharika, he challenged to develop Malawi regardless where that place is. Chakwera vowed to equitably distribute the national resources.
True to his words Chakwera has pumped in K6,339,234,388 for different projects in Blantyre alone.
Chakwera is constructing city roads such Chipatala Avenue – Kamba at K584Million, Dualisation of Chileka-Blantyre Road at K1 billion, rehabilitation of Lali Lubani Road across Masauko Chipembere Highway via Malawi Polytechnic at K648,000,000, rehabilitation of Namiwawa -Sunnyside (Bank road and Smythe Road) at K768, 000, 000 and Michiru Road – Likhubula (Black box) at K600,000,000.
On top of that the President’s administration is upgrading to asphalt surface Ndirande – Nkolokoti Road (Makhetha) at K1,420,000,000 , upgrading to asphalt surface of Newlands – Manje via Chiwembe Road at K720,000,000 as well as
,upgrading to asphalt surface of Old Zomba Road- Mapanga (4.2 Km) at K1,380,000,000.
