The opening of containers that were confiscated during the relocation exercise of refugees and asylum seekers to Dzaleka camp has commenced on a good note,with the owners of the containers expressing satisfaction with the exercise.
The exercise started on Monday at Mgona market with the guidance of the court order.
Officials from the Ministry of Homeland Security, Malawi police services, Refugees Department, judiciary, the media and other stakeholders witnessed the opening of the first containers.
The owner of the 2 containers Funny Hadassah said the operation is being done in a procedurally and transparent way, hence urging others to come forward.
“I am very grateful to the government for ensuring that there is transparency and accountability in the operation,” Hadassah said.
The police confiscated about 125 containers belonging to Refugees and asylum seekers who were residing outside Dzaleka Refuges Camp in Dowa district.
Recently,the Malawi police services issued a statement where it indicated that the refugees and asylum seekers are suspected to have committed numerous crimes including; money laundering and doing business without documents among others.
