Malawi geared to complete MK21 billion IFMIS project

Aug 30, 2023

Those working hard trying to deep their fingers into the public purse should think twice, the system is no longer porous.

For long time President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has been speaking against self enrichment at the expense of public service. And most dishonest civil servants have been diverting public resources through loopholes of the Integrated Financial Management Systems (IFMIS).

But soon after taking over power, the current Government thought of sealing all the loopholes to avoid recurring of cashgate where billions of money were stolen.

IFMIS has been successfully rolled out to all MDAs. The rollout initially met technical challenges but they are being addressed through trainings and network upgrading.

Accountants and Accounts Assistants across all MDAs are being trained and getting skills on the functions of the
modules.

A laboratory has been
established at Lilongwe Treasury cashier. In this 2022/23 the project will
roll-out to new sites and continue capacity building of officers.

This project shows Government is not fighting corruption by word only but also by action.

The current updated IFMIS is not an ordinary system but strong to detect any possible fraud. This IFMIS upgrading project is expected to be completed by 2025.

Previous Governments left the system with loopholes deliberately so that the officers are able to pluck some cash out of the system.
