Malawi’s President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, has emphasized the significance of mega farms in Malawi’s efforts to graduate and achieve Agenda 2063.
Chakwera was speaking in Kanengo where he officially launched the Mega Farms Program.
The program is one of the flagship campaign promises by the Chakwera-led government which was designed to transform the country’s agriculture sector by boosting productivity and exports for medium and large-scale farmers.
The launch of the program today marks a dawn of a new era in Malawi as the program in itself augurs well with Malawi’s Vision 2063 which outlines a path to self-reliance and prosperity by leveraging agriculture, industrialisation, and urbanisation.
“This One Stop Support Centre for the roll out of Mega Farms by the Private Sector across the country. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a game changer this is going to be for us as a country, especially if we
are serious about raising our economy to middle-income
status by 2030 as per the objectives of the First 10-Year
Implementation Plan for Malawi 2063,” he said.
He said the program is a game
changer for farmers, whose capacity for production
is on full display in the pavilions which he inspected.
According to Mega Farms Coordinator Alfred Mwenifumbo, currently 63,000 hectares of land has already been secured for growing different value chains during this farming season.
