President Chakwera discourages laziness among Malawians

Aug 5, 2023

Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Saturday had no kind words for lazy people who always expect freebies.

President Chakwera said this in Mzuzu when he presided over the consecration of Reverend Father Suzgo Nyirenda as Auxilliary Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese.

Chakwera said men of God have been sent to serve by labouring, and that no one is permitted to and entitled to be lazy.

“In other words, just because the harvest of possibilities and opportunities is before us does not mean that we must expect God or the Church or the Government to serve it to us on a silver platter. God has not sent us to be spoon fed. We are told clearly that even where there is a harvest, we will not enjoy it or bring it into our barns if we are not prepared to labour for it, to work for it, and to sweat for it,” he said.

Born on 20th June 1976, Nyirenda hails from Wozi in Mzimba District and was ordained a priest of Mzuzu Diocese on 19th July 2008.

He also served in various positions at national and diocesan levels including Director of Kasina Formation Centre from 2019 to date; Director and Formator at Christ the King Formation Centre in Rumphi; Parish Priest of Saint Augustine Parish and Vocations Directors in Mzuzu Diocese.

During the ceremony vice president Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima was also in attendance.
