holds meetings with Iceland Prime Minister and ILO Chief
It’s day one of President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s UN trip, already the Malawi leader is a busy man as he gets on to serious business.
On Sunday, President Chakwera had three events lined up for him. First was the UN Women Generations Equality Midpoint Event.
According to the information from President Lazarus Chakwera’s Facebook page, the President was expected to tell a positive story of the strides his government has made in the area of women empowerment.
President Chakwera’s govermment has made several high profile appointments which has seen several women breaking the “glass ceiling” in government structures. Notable names includes Mary Yolamu who became the First woman Inspector General, Martha Chizuma who also happen to be the first female Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau and other appointments.
Later in the day, President Chakwera was scheduled to hold bilateral meeting with Iceland Prime Minister Katrìn Jakobsdottìr where the two leaders will explore synergies of their respective economies cushioned by agro-processing and financial services.
President Chakwera concludes his busy schedule with an interface with Gilbert Houngbo, Director General of the the International Labour Organisation (ILO).The meeting is centred on finding a common ground in how Malawi can provide decent jobs and social security.
Looking at President Chakwera’s UN programme, this is just the beginning of a marathon of events to come during his stay in the free-land.
